Research group NPD has revealed that sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 grew 25.5% from 230,000 consoles sold in January 2008 to 309,000 sold this year. Nintendo made an even bigger gain with sales of its Wii console up 59.5% from 274,000 units shifted last year to 676,000 this year. A report on Sony’s PS3 sales will be up later today.

Microsoft has been pointing out about its recent price-cut-boosted Euro-market performance, claiming that Xbox 360 sales in November were 124 per cent up on last year’s sales for the corresponding month.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s President David Reeves has told website MVCUK that the PS3’s user base is thousands of units ahead of chief rival Xbox 360 as far as Europe goes. This takes the spotlight away from Microsoft’s claim that its recent price cuts for the Xbox 360 have prompted a sales-surge in Europe. November sales were reputably 124% up on 2007’s figures. It seems the figures for December are hotly anticipated.

As games consoles moved into the next generation, Microsoft got itself a head start in a campain to dethrone the Sony Playstation 3 as the biggest selling console. The successor to the orginal Xbox was the XBox 360. Microsoft redesigned and built the Xbox from the ground up with the Xbox 360 a radically different and more powerful machine than its predecessor. Like its competitor the PS3, the Xbox 360 is a complete home entertainment center but without Blu-Ray support. A HD-DVD add on was available but now the format is defunct it isn’t really a viable alternative to the PS3 for a next-gen hi-def movie player, althuog hit is just fine for regular DVD’s. The Xbox 360 packs a custom IBM Power PC-based CPU with three 3.2 GHz cores, a custom ATI graphics processor with 10 MB embedded DRAM and 512 MB 700 MHz GDDR3 RAM to give it it’s computational power. Despite its on-paper specification lacking behind that of the PS3, there is little difference between the look of games released on both platforms. The Xbox 360 also features a built in hard drive (which varies in size according to model), a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, wireless game controllers (not including the arcade model), three USB 2.0 ports and two memory card slots. With the introduction of the latest models all Xbox 360’s now feature HDMI ports. There are three consoles, the arcade which doesn’t feature a hard drive or wireless controllers, the premium which features a 60GB hard drive and wireless controllers and the elite which, in addition to the premium, features a 120GB hard drive and a sleek black finish.
