Toshiba launch their first Blu-ray player

Toshiba is doing what was unthinkable just a few years ago and launching their very own Blu-ray player. The Toshiba BDX2000 will be released in November and supports Profile 2.0 BD-Live, their own REGZA-Link connection technology and outputs 1080p at 24 frames per second. As for audio it will decode and pass-through Dolby True HD / DTS-HD Master Audio. It will retail for a modest $250 when launched.

Toshiba’s press documentation even stated ‘This product does not play HD-DVD discs’, just to make sure there’s no hope of a HD-DVD resurrection.

Blu-ray production costs to half in coming year

Far eastern optical drive makers predict the cost to produce Blu-ray players will drop to around $50 USD in 2010.

The current cost of production is around $100 USD, with the bulk of the cost taken up by chipsets and laser heads.

In light of this, we would expect these savings to start filtering through to the retail channels over the next few months.
